Greene County Medical Center’s Jessica Brown, RN, was honored as one of 100 Great Iowa Nurses at the 2018 awards ceremony held in Des Moines on Sunday, May 6.

Brown has been with the medical center since April 2017 and is the primary nurse for all patients receiving chemotherapy through the outpatient oncology clinic.

Nurses throughout the state, totaling more than 50,000, are nominated by patients, peers or leadership teams for this coveted honor.  The award is designed to “recognize the meaningful and lasting contributions to humanity and the nursing profession,” according to the 100 Great Iowa Nurses organization.

Brown was nominated by recently retired pharmacist Bonnie Orris, who worked closely with Brown on many outpatient oncology chemotherapy needs, including best practice protocols.  Orris’ nomination noted that Brown “has the patients’ needs in the center of all that she does.”

Orris also commented on Brown’s high level of compassion.  She wrote, “Jess exudes warmth and approachability.  She is perceptive to the needs of others and demonstrates a great deal of empathy.”

Brown is the second Greene County Medical Center nurse in the last few years to receive a 100 Great Iowa Nurse award.  Her direct supervisor, Clinics Director Jenny Taylor, received the award in 2016.
