Women's Health Physical Therapy

What is women's health physical therapy?

Women's health physical therapy addresses issues that are specific to women.  This can include:

  • Urinary incontinence and urgency
  • Bowel incontinence
  • Constipation
  • Pelvic pain
  • Painful intercourse
  • Pregnancy and post-partum pain
  • Diastasis recti
  • Lower back pain
  • Hip pain
  • Sacroiliac joint pain

Evaluation for women's health physical therapy can include:

  • Assessment of the mobility of joints in the painful region
  • Palpation for tender areas and trigger points
  • Muscle assessment for length and strength

Some of these assessments will be done externally.  However, with specialized training, a physical therapist can also complete an internal muscle examination to further assist in providing the most specific treatment.
