JEFFERSON, Iowa – For many people, healthy aging means more than adding years to life. It means remembering names, enjoying conversations, staying independent and continuing to do the things they love. While no one can prevent every cause of memory loss, research continues to show that everyday habits can make a meaningful difference in long-term brain health.
That is the focus of Greene County Public Health’s Brain Help & Hope: KEYS to Dementia Prevention, a 10-week course returning to Greene County Medical Center this fall.
Beginning Tuesday, September 1st, the class will meet each Tuesday through November 3rd from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. in the Education Center at Greene County Medical Center, 1000 W Lincoln Way in Jefferson.
Rather than focusing on fear, Brain Help & Hope focuses on possibilities. Each week explores one of the key lifestyle factors shown to support brain health, including nutrition, physical activity, sleep, stress management, social connection and other practical strategies participants can begin using right away. Local experts guide the discussions and provide realistic tools to help participants make lasting, sustainable changes.
It is important to note; this course is designed for prevention purposes. Participants must be able to live independently and actively participate in goal setting, implementing behavioral changes and all other class activities. Unfortunately, this course cannot accept individuals who already have evidence of cognitive decline or a diagnosis of dementia, Alzheimer’s or similar disorders. Please reach out if you have any questions about this requirement.
“People often assume memory loss is a part of getting older, but we know there are many things within our control that support brain health,” said Deb Hoskins, Public Health RN and course facilitator. “This class is designed to give people practical information, encouragement and hope. Small changes really can make a meaningful difference.”
Registration is now open. The cost is only $20 for the full 10-week series, and class size is limited. To register or for more information, call 515-386-3228.
